The atmosphere loses more heat to space than it absorbs directly from the sun but it is not getting colder. 70% of the heat keeping the atmosphere from getting colder comes from Earth's surface. About 70% of the heat transfer from the surface to the atmosphere takes place through evaporation, mainly from the ocean, which cools the surface and warms the atmosphere when the water vapour condenses.
